Carbon dioxide, carbonic acid is an organic compound, a gas that is familiar to everyone.
In addition, carbon dioxide is now obtained as a by-product from the recovery of pure gases - nitrogen, oxygen and argon.
- Colorless and odorless gas
- Non-flammable and non-toxic
- Heavier than air
- Soluble in water
- Turns into "dry ice" under extreme cooling
Carbon dioxide has found applications in almost all branches of modern industry:
- As a neutralizer for pH control during cement analysis.
- As a medium for supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) in sample preparation and as a carrier gas for analytical and preparative supercritical chromatography (SFC).
- For chemical vapor deposition of silicon dioxide.
- As a foaming agent.
- In mixtures with ethylene oxide for sterilization.
- For drying penicillin and blood analyses in medicine.
- As a coolant in some mechanical cooling systems.
- In aerosol packaging.
- In mixtures for laser and welding work.
- In medicine.
- In food production.
- For fire extinguishing.
Let's consider the applications of CO2 in more detail. Carbon dioxide is used for maximum weld strength in metal welding; this gas is also used in casting (the molds are blown with it).
Thanks to its flame suppression properties, carbon dioxide is used in the production of firefighting equipment (fire extinguishers).
CO2 is used in medicine. For example, in surgery. Minimally invasive (laparoscopic) operations have largely become possible only with the use of medical carbon dioxide. In addition, carbon dioxide is used for diagnostic and resuscitation purposes.
In the food industry, carbon dioxide is used to preserve the freshness of products and is also used in the production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic carbonated beverages.
In agriculture, carbon dioxide is necessary for plowing fields and feeding plants to stimulate their rapid growth.
CO2 is transported and stored in steel cylinders in a liquid state. The containers must be labeled, indicating the name of the substance, the manufacturer, the batch number and series, the date of production, and information about the GOST standard.
The transportation of CO2 gas falls under hazard class 2. When transporting carbon dioxide in cylinders, safety measures must be observed to avoid impacts on the gas containers and leaks. During transportation, the containers with liquefied gas must be protected from excessive heating.
An increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the inhaled air negatively affects human health: general weakness appears, concentration and performance decrease, and drowsiness occurs. Elevated levels of carbon dioxide are considered hazardous to health.
