Electronegative gas, sulfur hexafluoride (sulfur hexafluoride, SF6, sulfur fluoride (VI)), is a heavy gas (5 times heavier than air), color- and odor-free. The gas is stable under normal conditions. Not reactive.
It does not react with hydrogen, oxygen, alkalis and acids. It is supplied mostly in cylinders. It is a non-toxic and non-flammable chemical compound that is five to six times heavier than air. It was called electronegative gas because of its key characteristics, i.e. higher electrical insulating and arc extinguishing abilities. Its degree of inertia is slightly less than that of helium, and its sparking voltage level is elevated.
- retains properties during long-term storage in cylinders
- quickly recombines under electrical discharge
- has high electrical strength
- reduces heating of current-carrying parts due to good cooling properties of sulfur hexafluoride
- chemically inactive and non-aggressive to metals at temperatures up to +500⁰C
In energy, it is used as an insulator and coolant in high-voltage sulfur hexafluoride circuit breakers, at substations and power transmission lines with sulfur hexafluoride insulation. In the chemical industry: in plasma-chemical etching processes of silicon, for filling glass units for heat and sound insulation, as a source of fluorine, as a cushion in open baths with molten metals due to its inertness and very high density, as a carrier gas in laboratories in supercritical chromatography (SFC). Petrochemistry: in supercritical fluid extraction (SFE).
In medicine, as a contrast agent in ultrasound studies. In retinal surgery.
As an indicator in leak detection. To check the efficiency of ventilation systems.
Sulfur hexafluoride is very fluid, seeping through the shells of metal containers and sealing joints. Therefore, special cylinders are needed for its storage and transportation.
Transportation of cylinders must be carried out in a horizontal position with spacers between the cylinders or in a vertical position with mandatory protection against possible falls. Transportation in packaged form in special containers is allowed.
Joint transportation with oxygen cylinders is not allowed.
