Carbon monoxide gas, carbon monoxide, CO is an extremely toxic gaseous substance. Colorless gas, without taste and odor. In normal conditions it is slightly lighter than air. The atmosphere of the Earth has 10% of CO, which comes from the living beings, plants, as well as forest and steppe fires and industrial enterprises (mostly oil refineries).

Carbon monoxide is produced by burning organic compounds or fuel at low oxygen content. In addition, the gas is formed when carbon dioxide reacts with heated coals.

Carbon monoxide poses a great danger to human health as it is very toxic. It easily enters the body with inhaled air, enters the blood and dramatically inhibits the gas metabolic activity of hemoglobin.

  • does not react with water
  • acid
  • or alkali
  • lighter than air
  • very poisonous

Pure carbon monoxide is used in various ways in industry:

  • Chemical industry: carbon monoxide is used to obtain complex organic compounds and unique metals (germanium, cadmium, tin);
  • Carbon monoxide is necessary in electronics manufacturing. Glass housings for certain components are sealed with a burner. The flame must be moisture-free. Thus, hydrogen and other hydrocarbon gases are replaced with CO;
  • Carbon monoxide is used in medicine. This gas is used to study gas exchange in the lungs;
  • Carbon monoxide is used as a component in laser and calibration gas mixtures;
  • CO is used in the production of silicon solar cells. The gas is used to obtain high-purity silicon.
  • CO is also used in the food industry. The gas is used to process meat and fish to give products a "marketable appearance" without affecting the taste of the product.

Carbon monoxide gas belongs to hazard class 4. It is transported in pressurized containers. It is easily flammable and may explode when the container is heated. Because CO is odorless, detecting its presence in the air is extremely difficult without special equipment. Therefore, the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is significantly increased. During transportation and any work related to carbon monoxide, workers must follow safety regulations and exercise extreme caution.
