Aerospace industry as a high-boiling (non-cryogenic) oxidizer for rocket propellant.
In conjunction with fuels based on hydrazine derivatives (methylhydrazine, asymmetric dimethylhydrazine) in rocket engines, in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation referred to as "amil", as a solution in nitric acid due to the high temperature of transition to a solid state.
In propulsion systems of manned spacecraft, satellites, orbital and interplanetary stations, for forming self-igniting fuel mixtures with alkylhydrazines with an ignition delay time of about 0.003 s.
Nitrogen tetroxide is transported in special tankers with insulation and a pipeline system, into which, depending on the ambient air temperature, either warm water or cooling solution is supplied.
Nitrogen tetroxide is transported under an excess pressure of 0.1...0.15 MPa. Railway tankers JAC-44, JKC-39 and road tankers are equipped with discharge and filling pipes, safety valves, pressure gauges, and level indicators. Railway tankers have a capacity of about 40 m³, road tankers — 30...60 m³. JSC Russian Railways transports it in JAC-44 tankers.
