Ethane (C2H6) is a colorless, tasteless and odorless gas that is in demand in various industries for the synthesis of ethylene.
Ethane is produced by flask electrolysis, coal liquefaction (CTL) or hydrocarbon hydrocracking, from fossil gases. Unmodified gas has no special practical value, as it is poorly soluble in water and other polar solvent

- In thermal dehydrogenation at +550˚C …+600˚C, ethylene is produced; at +800˚C and above, acetylene, benzene, and soot are obtained;
- In chlorination at +300˚C…+450˚C, ethyl chloride is formed;
- Oxidation of ethane leads to the formation of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and fine carbon particles (fullerenes, graphene, etc.) as the oxygen concentration decreases;
- Nitroethane and nitromethane are obtained by nitration of the substance in the gas phase.
The value of this saturated hydrocarbon lies in the fact that ethylene, which is a raw material for a wide range of materials, can be easily obtained from it. Vinyl chloride – one of the components of PVC – is also produced using ethane. Moreover, this is the most economically advantageous and straightforward reaction in the manufacture of PVC products.
Ethane has proven to be an effective cryogenic medium as it can instantly freeze any object in its liquid phase. This property is of great importance for laboratories and research centers.
Cylinders should be transported horizontally with spacers between cylinders or vertically with protection against possible falling. Transport in packaged form in special containers is allowed.
Joint transportation with oxygen cylinders is not permitted.
Movement/transportation must comply with the codes of the respective type of transport, federal laws, other regulatory acts, and the legislation of the country where the movement/transportation/loading takes place.
