Krypton is a monoatomic odorless, tasteless and colorless gas. It is obtained as a by-product in the form of a krypton-xenon mixture during the air separation process in industrial plants.
In the process of air separation by low-temperature fraction distillation, liquid oxygen fraction containing liquid hydrocarbons, krypton and xenon is continuously distilled (the oxygen with hydrocarbons fraction removal by distillation is necessary to ensure explosion safety).
- Colorless gas
- Tasteless and odorless
- Three times heavier than air
- Non-toxic gas
- Has a suffocating effect
- Narcotic effect on the body
In the production of high-power excimer lasers (Kr-F). For filling incandescent lamps, increasing the lifespan of the filament. As oxidizers for rocket fuel. In the production of heat-resistant windows and portholes.
In medicine, krypton isotopes are used for visualizing airways in MRI and for lung ventilation/perfusion. In liquid form, the element is used for constructing quasi-homogeneous electromagnetic calorimeters in experimental particle physics, but it is often replaced by the less expensive argon.
The transportation of cylinders must be carried out in a horizontal position with spacers between the cylinders or in a vertical position, with mandatory protection against possible falling. Transportation in packaged form in special containers is allowed.
Joint transportation with oxygen cylinders is not allowed.
Transportation/movement must comply with the codes of the relevant type of transport, federal laws, other regulations, and the legislation of the country where the transportation/movement/transshipment is taking place.
