Methyl acetylene (propyne, propadiene, C3H4) is a colorless, flammable gas with an unpleasant odor and moderate toxicity.

Methyl acetylene is essentially an alkyne that is produced by magnesium tricarbide hydrolysis or propane cracking. It is also a by-product in the production of acetylene and other hydrocarbons, which determines a similar set of physicochemical properties within the class.

  • Fire-explosive gas
  • Colorless in liquid and gas forms
  • Non-toxic gas
  • Sweetish odor
  • At low concentrations
  • warning properties are weakly expressed

Methylacetylene has found use in the metallurgical industry for gas flame processing of metals - welding and cutting. In addition, this gas is used as rocket fuel.
